Dr. Alison Bentley is a plant geneticist whose career has spanned the world’s leading agricultural research institutions. At the time of the 2023 award, she served as Bayer Visiting Scholar at the University of Minnesota Plant Breeding Center, and had recently completed nearly three years as Global Wheat Program Director at the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) — one of the world’s foremost agricultural research organizations.
Her scientific work has advanced the understanding of wheat genetics and breeding with direct implications for global food security and nutrition. Prior to CIMMYT, she served as Director of Genetics and Breeding at NIAB in Cambridge, U.K. She has since served as Group Leader at The Australian National University and currently serves as Deputy Director of Science in Agriculture & Food at CSIRO in Australia.
Recognized for her ability to communicate complex scientific concepts to diverse audiences — from researchers and policymakers to the broader public — Dr. Bentley has also been a consistent advocate for gender equity in science and agriculture. Her approach to science communication reflects a conviction that research only fulfills its potential when it is understood and acted upon beyond the laboratory.

The 2023 Borlaug CAST Communication Award was presented to Dr. Alison Bentley on October 25, 2023, during a breakfast event at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines, Iowa. The ceremony was held as a side event at the International Borlaug Dialogue during World Food Prize week, bringing together agricultural scientists, development professionals, and food systems leaders from around the world.
Dr. Bentley delivered a keynote address titled “Speaking up for Speaking Out,” exploring the historical significance of scientific leadership and communication in driving positive change in global food systems — and the particular importance of advancing gender equity in science and agriculture.
