“Without food, there can be no peace. Without science, there can be no food.”
Dr. Norman E. Borlaug
Celebrating Excellence in Agricultural Communication
The Borlaug CAST Communication Award is a prestigious honor that recognizes individuals whose dedication to advancing and promoting agricultural science echoes the transformative legacies of Dr. Norman E. Borlaug and Dr. Charles A. Black. Dr. Borlaug—revered as “The Man Who Fed the World”—authored CAST’s first publication in 1973, while Dr. Black served as CAST’s first President, first Executive Vice President, and a founding committee member. Their shared vision for innovative research, effective communication, and global food security lives on through this award.
Originally known as the Charles A. Black Award (1986–2009), the BCCA has, since 2010, spotlighted the impactful efforts of those who translate complex scientific discoveries into clear, compelling messages for policymakers, the media, and the public. By championing best practices, leading-edge technology, and a passion for sustainable food systems, these honorees exemplify the core values that drive both CAST and the broader agricultural community.
The Borlaug CAST Communication Award celebrates those who:
The 2025 Borlaug CAST Communication Award recipient will be honored during the World Food Prize from October 21 to 23, 2025.
They will deliver a presentation highlighting their leadership and agricultural communication breakthroughs. Their dedication sets an inspiring example for future Borlaug CAST Communication Award nominees.
Each recipient receives a custom-made bronze sculpture, “A World Supported by Plants and Animals,” created by celebrated artist Jerry Palen.
Jerry Palen is an award-winning sculptor, painter, and cartoonist who received the 2009 Governor’s Arts Award for his artistic contributions. His iconic "Stampede" cartoon series, featuring the ranching couple Flo and Elmo, runs in agricultural publications across the U.S. and Canada.
Palen’s sculptures, watercolors, and oil paintings are admired worldwide, with his bronzes gifted by every U.S. President since Jimmy Carter.
