CAST congratulates our friends at the World Food Prize Foundation on the announcement of the 2025 World Food Prize Laureate: Dr. Mariangela Hungria, a leading Brazilian microbiologist with Embrapa (Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation).
Dr. Hungria is honored for her pioneering research on biological nitrogen fixation, which has transformed agricultural practices in Brazil. Her work has enabled farmers to reduce chemical fertilizer use and increase crop yields, particularly in soybeans, helping Brazil become the world’s top soybean producer.
Her four-decade career has not only advanced sustainable agriculture, but also contributed to environmental protection by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and water pollution.
Dr. Hungria will be formally recognized at the 2025 World Food Prize Ceremony in October in Des Moines, Iowa.
