CAST Announces New $1,000 Science Communication Scholarship
The Council for Agricultural Science and Technology (CAST) proudly announces the launch of the CAST Science Communication Scholarship, a new annual award designed to recognize and support exceptional student communicators in the field of agricultural science.

Ames, Iowa — October 7, 2025 — The Council for Agricultural Science and Technology (CAST) proudly announces the launch of the CAST Science Communication Scholarship, a new annual award designed to recognize and support exceptional student communicators in the field of agricultural science.

The scholarship will award $1,000 to one student each year who demonstrates excellence in translating complex agricultural topics into clear, accurate, creative, and impactful messages for diverse audiences.

“Effective science communication is the foundation for informed decision-making in agriculture,” said Dr. Chris Boomsma, CAST Chief Executive Officer. “With this scholarship, CAST is investing in students who are not only advancing research but also connecting it meaningfully to society.”

Encouraging the Next Generation of Ag Communicators

The CAST Science Communication Scholarship reflects the organization’s long-standing mission to assemble, interpret, and communicate credible, balanced, science-based information to policymakers, the media, the private sector, and the public.

Applicants will be evaluated by representatives from CAST’s Animal, Plant, and Food Work Groups, ensuring a multidisciplinary and science-driven review process.

Award Details

  • 💰 Scholarship Amount: $1,000
  • 🎓 Eligibility: Undergraduate and graduate students who are either CAST Student Members or enrolled at a CAST member university during the 2025 academic year. Students who are not yet members may join CAST when applying.
  • 📅 Application Deadline: November 7, 2025
  • 🏛️ Award Ceremony: December 2, 2025, at the Borlaug CAST Communication Award (BCCA) Ceremony in Washington, D.C.
  • ✈️ Travel Support: U.S.-based recipients will receive sponsorship to attend in person; international recipients will participate virtually.

How to Apply

Applicants must submit:

  • A 500–700 word essay on the importance of science communication in agriculture and their contributions to the field.
  • Supporting materials (e.g., videos, articles, podcasts, or graphics) showcasing their communication skills.
  • A short bio (100 words) for CAST announcements if selected.

Applications are open through November 7, 2025.
