Strategic Advisory Council

The Strategic Advisory Council (SAC) advises CAST leadership on organizational strategy, long-term positioning, and priorities in agricultural science communication. SAC members bring external perspective and expertise to guide CAST’s direction.

Strategic Advisory Council — CAST Volunteers

Role & Responsibilities

SAC members serve in an advisory capacity — they do not vote on operational or publication decisions, but their guidance directly informs CAST's strategic choices. The SAC provides an outside view that complements the scientific depth of the workgroups and the governance authority of the Board.

The SAC is currently charged with assessing and recommending the steps necessary for CAST to potentially serve as the National Academy of Agriculture. The Council's recommendations are delivered to the CAST Board of Directors.

What you do

  • Advise CAST leadership on strategic direction, communications, and organizational priorities
  • Identify trends, opportunities, and risks in agricultural science communication
  • Connect CAST to relevant networks, partners, and potential collaborators
  • Participate in SAC meetings and respond to periodic requests for input
  • Serve as an ambassador for CAST's mission in your professional community

What CAST provides

  • Direct access to CAST leadership and staff
  • Visibility on the CAST website and in governance communications
  • Inclusion in relevant CAST programs and events

Selection & Term

SAC members are appointed by CAST leadership based on their expertise, professional standing, and the perspectives they bring to CAST's strategic challenges. Membership reflects a range of disciplines, sectors, and viewpoints relevant to agricultural science communication — including leaders from academia, industry, government, and nonprofit organizations.

Term length and renewal are determined by CAST leadership in consultation with the Board. There is no open application process — nominations are made internally or through existing CAST networks. Contact CAST staff for current SAC composition and vacancies.

How We Work Together

The SAC meets periodically — frequency and format are determined by CAST leadership. Between meetings, CAST staff may reach out for input on specific strategic questions or initiatives. SAC members are not expected to attend all CAST events or meetings, but participation in the CAST Annual Meeting is encouraged where possible.

Time commitment is lighter than workgroup or Board membership. The SAC is designed for senior professionals who can offer high-value strategic input without a heavy ongoing schedule — typically a small number of structured engagements per year.

Promotion & Visibility

SAC members are listed on the CAST website's Strategic Advisory Council page with their bio, headshot, title, and institution. CAST may also recognize SAC members in governance communications and the Annual Report.

  • Listed on cast-science.org/strategic-advisory-council/
  • Included in CAST's Annual Report and activities reports
  • Recognized at the CAST Annual Meeting

Your Profile

CAST needs the following from every SAC member:

  • Short bio (2–3 sentences: name, title, institution, area of expertise)
  • LinkedIn profile URL

Your profile is used for the SAC listing page, governance communications, and the CAST Annual Report. Submit to your CAST staff contact when your term begins.
