Volunteer Hub
The Strategic Advisory Council (SAC) advises CAST leadership on organizational strategy, long-term positioning, and priorities in agricultural science communication. SAC members bring external perspective and expertise to guide CAST’s direction.
SAC members serve in an advisory capacity — they do not vote on operational or publication decisions, but their guidance directly informs CAST's strategic choices. The SAC provides an outside view that complements the scientific depth of the workgroups and the governance authority of the Board.
The SAC is currently charged with assessing and recommending the steps necessary for CAST to potentially serve as the National Academy of Agriculture. The Council's recommendations are delivered to the CAST Board of Directors.
SAC members are appointed by CAST leadership based on their expertise, professional standing, and the perspectives they bring to CAST's strategic challenges. Membership reflects a range of disciplines, sectors, and viewpoints relevant to agricultural science communication — including leaders from academia, industry, government, and nonprofit organizations.
Term length and renewal are determined by CAST leadership in consultation with the Board. There is no open application process — nominations are made internally or through existing CAST networks. Contact CAST staff for current SAC composition and vacancies.
The SAC meets periodically — frequency and format are determined by CAST leadership. Between meetings, CAST staff may reach out for input on specific strategic questions or initiatives. SAC members are not expected to attend all CAST events or meetings, but participation in the CAST Annual Meeting is encouraged where possible.
Time commitment is lighter than workgroup or Board membership. The SAC is designed for senior professionals who can offer high-value strategic input without a heavy ongoing schedule — typically a small number of structured engagements per year.
SAC members are listed on the CAST website's Strategic Advisory Council page with their bio, headshot, title, and institution. CAST may also recognize SAC members in governance communications and the Annual Report.

No. The SAC is advisory. Governance decisions — including publication proposals and organizational policy — are made by the Board of Directors and workgroups.
Yes. SAC members are welcome to contribute to CAST Voices, webinars, the podcast, or other programs on an individual basis, separate from their SAC role.
CAST leadership and the Board of Directors identify candidates based on expertise and strategic fit. There is no open application process — nominations are made internally or through existing CAST networks.
Yes. Recommendations can be submitted to CAST staff, who will share them with leadership for consideration.
