Crop microbiomes — the communities of bacteria, fungi, archaea, and other microorganisms associated with plants and soils — offer a scientifically mature and commercially promising pathway to increasing agricultural yields while reducing reliance on synthetic chemical inputs. Realizing this potential will require sustained investment in interdisciplinary research and training, advances in sequencing and machine learning technologies, stronger academic-industry partnerships, and effective public communication to support product development, regulation, and adoption.
